About Uncle Muttie
Tony Assan (Uncle Muttie) is a respected elder in the Torres Strait Islander community. He is passionate about teaching visitors about the rich histories of the region, especially the pearling and fishing history.
As a man of the sea, Uncle Muttie has been a traditional fisherman who has navigated the tides for many years. Today, he still dives for Painted Rock Lobsters (locally known as Crayfish). As a practicing diver, he shares his knowledge of the sea with visitors during an exclusive tour of the operating crayfish processing station.
